According
to Police Chief Laurie
Pritchett, “Freedom
Alley” earned its
nickname on December 12, 1961, when 265 demonstrators were arrested
during the beginning stages of the Albany
Movement and packed into the alley adjacent to City Hall for
booking at the nearby police headquarters. The demonstrators stood
quietly as they waited through a heavy rainstorm, despite the
fact that the booking process took almost three hours. Freedom
Alley can be seen at the beginning of this series
of WSB-TV news footage from the Albany Movement.
